2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast predicts quieter, erratic activity

Caribbean climatologist Dr. Cedric Van Meerbeeck warned that the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season will be quieter but more erratic, forecasting about five hurricanes with two reaching major intensity. He linked the reduced storm count to a strong El Niño pattern, which typically suppresses tropical cyclones while increasing heat, flash‑flood risk and drought in the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and other islands. Van Meerbeeck urged regional governments to improve water storage and protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat and intense rainfall.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s outlook calls for 8‑14 named storms, 3‑6 hurricanes and 1‑3 major hurricanes, while Colorado State University predicts 13 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes. Emergency officials in South Carolina and Georgia emphasized that a single storm can still cause severe impacts, citing historical hurricanes and stressing preparedness measures such as monitoring the National Hurricane Center’s updates. Both forecasts noted that El Niño‑induced wind shear and Saharan dust may further inhibit storm formation, but warned that warmer sea‑surface temperatures could still produce dangerous weather events.
