2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Prompts Preparedness Guidance in Florida and Texas

Florida State University researchers warned that, although forecasts suggest a quieter 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, the danger of a major landfall remains. They stressed that a single storm can cause severe damage, that hazards such as tornadoes, flooding and wind can occur outside the forecast cone, and that rising ocean temperatures and rapid coastal growth increase vulnerability. Experts also highlighted the importance of insurance, resilient construction and mitigation efforts.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a statewide advisory urging residents to develop emergency plans and assemble comprehensive kits before the season begins. The guidance includes reviewing evacuation maps, preparing multiple travel routes, keeping vehicles fueled, securing medication and pet supplies, storing water, non‑perishable food, lighting, batteries, a battery‑powered radio, hygiene items, important documents and power banks, and registering with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry for additional support.
