2026 BC Summer Games in Kelowna Highlight Fraser River Rugby Gold and Abbotsford Medal Success

The 2026 BC Summer Games concluded in Kelowna, British Columbia, featuring over 3,000 athletes competing in 19 sports. In the Rugby 7s competition, Fraser River (Zone 4) captured its first gold medal, with Vancouver Island Central Coastal (Zone 6) taking silver and Fraser Valley (Zone 3) bronze.

Abbotsford athletes were among the top performers, earning multiple medals across track and field and wrestling. Gavinjot Jhaj won gold in both the male discus (49.36 m) and hammer throw (46.16 m). Wrestlers Reet Toor (female 49 kg) and Carvell Purcell Jr. (male 48 kg) each claimed gold in their divisions, while Ariah Salva added a gold in the female javelin. The Abbotsford contingent helped the Fraser Valley team accumulate 20 gold, 24 silver and 23 bronze medals, placing fourth overall with 67 medals. The Vancouver‑Coastal region edged out Vancouver Island‑Central Coast 122‑121 to finish first overall.

The Games marked Kelowna’s first hosting since 2008, with the next BC Summer Games slated for Penticton in 2028 and the 2028 BC Winter Games set for Kamloops.
