World Cup 2026 knockout pairings announced, foreign‑born player share hits record

FIFA has released the schedule for the round‑of‑32 at the 2026 World Cup. The first matches feature the Netherlands versus Morocco on 30 June, Brazil against Japan on 29 June, South Africa versus Canada on 28 June and the United States against Bosnia on 2 July. Subsequent fixtures and the full bracket through to the final on 19 July are also detailed.

The tournament also marks a milestone in player nationality. A record 289 of the 1,248 squad members – about 16.5% – were born outside the country they represent, the highest share in World Cup history. Notable cases include Imrane Bagaïd scoring for Senegal against his birthplace France and Michael Olise, born in London, playing for France. Eight of the 48 qualified teams have no foreign‑born players, while nations such as Qatar field athletes from ten different nationalities.

These trends reflect broader migration patterns and raise new dynamics for team selection as the expanded 48‑team format proceeds.
