2026 FIFA World Cup sees record TV viewership and 22 Francophone teams qualify

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first tournament fully hosted in North America, generated unprecedented audience numbers in the United States. Fox and Nielsen reported a 92% increase in group‑stage viewership compared with 2022, and the semi‑finals broke records, out‑performing the NBA Game 5 when combined with Telemundo and Peacock audiences. Samsung Ads data showed that eight out of ten smart‑TVs were tuned to the final, delivering 18.7 million home‑screen ad impressions, with nine‑in‑ten viewers seeing a Samsung ad at power‑on. Overall, Samsung‑measured tournament viewership rose 328% over its usual levels, and other platforms such as Hisense/Toshiba’s VIDAA, Amazon Fire TV and Google TV also sold home‑screen ad space.

In parallel, 22 of the 48 qualified nations belong to the International Organisation of La Francophonie, accounting for roughly 46% of the field. The Francophone contingent includes France, Belgium, Switzerland, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, Egypt, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Canada, Haiti, associate member Qatar and observer nations Argentina, Croatia, Mexico and Uruguay, underscoring the linguistic and cultural influence of the Francophonie in the world’s premier football event.
