2026 Honduras femicide toll reaches 135, with 95% impunity

The Observatorio de la Violencia of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras reported that 135 women have been violently killed in Honduras so far in 2026. The majority of these femicides were committed by close acquaintances such as partners, ex‑partners or family members, and the highest numbers were recorded in the Central District, San Pedro Sula, Choloma, Catacamas, Juticalpa and Trujillo, with ten deaths in the latter municipality alone.

The observatory highlighted that 95 % of femicide cases remain impunity‑free, urging stronger penalties, more effective scientific and forensic investigations, and the implementation of the proposed Law of Alerta Morada, which would accelerate official response when a woman disappears and improve chances of locating her alive.
