2026 Midterm trends show shifting House races and declining mail voting

As the 2026 midterm elections progress, new data indicates shifting political dynamics across the United States. In North Carolina, mail-in ballot participation is approximately 23% lower than the same period in 2022. While mail voting has declined across all political affiliations, the drop is most pronounced among registered Democrats, who have returned about 31% fewer ballots compared to 2022. Among accepted mail ballots where race was recorded, Black voters accounted for 10.7% of the total.

Nationally, the Cook Political Report has shifted 18 House races in favor of Democrats, contributing to discussions regarding a potential Democratic majority in the chamber. However, analysts note that Republicans maintain a significant fundraising advantage. In Texas, Republican efforts include a $30 million funding boost for Ken Paxton. Meanwhile, in Maine, Senator Susan Collins reportedly trails Democrat Troy Jackson by four points in recent polling.
