2026 World Cup Fails to Boost US Tourism, Sparks Mexican Beer Sales
International visitor arrivals to the United States fell 4.3% in the January‑June period of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, despite the FIFA World Cup being hosted on American soil. The country recorded 15.9 million foreign visitors, excluding arrivals from Mexico and Canada, and June arrivals were down 3.4% year‑on‑year, indicating a slower recovery in inbound tourism.
At the same time, Mexican‑origin beer maker Constellation Brands said the tournament helped it meet its U.S. sales targets for its Grupo Modelo‑owned brands, offsetting a weak first‑quarter demand. Vice‑president Nina Mayagoitia explained that the World Cup boosted demand for the company’s Mexican‑style beers in the United States. Constellation Brands also confirmed progress on a new production plant in Veracruz, Mexico, its third facility, which will expand capacity and shift part of its export logistics to maritime routes.
Both developments illustrate how the 2026 World Cup generated mixed economic effects: it did not revive overall U.S. tourism but did stimulate specific consumer categories linked to the event.
