2026 World Cup hosts US eliminated in round of 16
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, entered its expanded knockout phase on June 28. The new 48‑team format added an extra round, producing several early upsets.
In the round of 16 the United States were beaten 4–1 by Belgium, ending the hosts' campaign amid criticism of effort and intensity. Canada also exited, losing 3–0 to Morocco, while Mexico fell 3–2 to England. Other notable eliminations included Germany, which lost on penalties to Paraguay, and Brazil, which was knocked out by Norway.
The tournament’s quarterfinal lineup now features Spain‑Belgium, Norway‑England, France‑Morocco and Argentina‑Switzerland, with France, Spain and Argentina remaining among the favourites.
