24 Hour Television returns amid criticism of production and past scandals

The Nippon TV charity program ‘24 Hour Television: Love Saves the Earth’ is scheduled to broadcast its latest installment starting August 29. This year’s theme is ‘My Family Story – Who Do You Care For?’, featuring segments such as a story about a woman undergoing rehabilitation to return to work after battling illness sequelae. The Kyoto Ohara Memorial Hospital Group is providing filming cooperation for a segment airing on August 30.

Despite the upcoming broadcast, the program faces renewed scrutiny. Past criticisms from comedian Beat Takeshi regarding the payment of appearance fees for charity programs have resurfaced online. Additionally, the show’s production style, which often links the charity runners' personal hardships to their physical endurance, has drawn skepticism. This follows a 2023 scandal involving the embezzlement of approximately 2.64 million yen in donations by a former Nippon TV executive, an incident that damaged the program's credibility as a charity event.
