250 Dogs Rescued in Am Ministro Amarante, Portugal After Animal‑Cruelty Probe

On Tuesday, the Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) rescued roughly 250 dogs from a property in the parish of Mancelos, Amarante, after a request for urgent assistance from the Directorate‑General for Food and Veterinary Affairs (DGAV). The animals were vaccinated, micro‑chipped and then transferred to shelters and associations in the Greater Porto area and other regions.

The operation led to a woman being placed in pre‑trial detention for alleged animal‑cruelty offences. Because the dogs are part of an ongoing criminal investigation, they cannot be released for adoption until the legal process is concluded. The Amarante municipal council highlighted its logistical and veterinary support, while local animal‑protection groups, including the Midas association in Matosinhos, are caring for the rescued dogs and seeking donations.

Authorities emphasised that the case involves complex legal issues and that the final disposition of the animals will be coordinated by the GNR in cooperation with animal‑protection organisations.
