2K Games launches Small Axe Studio with former FIFA developers

2K Games has established Small Axe Studio, a new Triple-A sports development studio based in Vancouver, to create a major new sports franchise. The studio is composed of numerous veteran developers formerly associated with EA Sports' FIFA series.

Key leadership at Small Axe includes Executive Producer Aaron McHardy, who held the same position at EA Sports for over 15 years, and Design Chief Gary Peterson, who has been involved with FIFA titles since 2006. Other veteran staff members include Operations Chief Tom Pan, Engineering Lead Mike Thompson, and Technical Art Director John Cruz.

While the specific sport being developed has not been officially confirmed, the studio's logo features a design reminiscent of a football club crest on a sports jersey, suggesting a potential entry into the football (soccer) market. This move follows the separation of EA Sports and FIFA in 2023, which led to the rebranding of the EA series to EA Sports FC.
