2K launches Small Axe Studios in Vancouver to develop new AAA sports franchise

2K has announced the launch of Small Axe Studios, a new AAA development studio based in Vancouver, Canada. The studio is an evolution of the 2K Sports Lab project initiated in 2023 and is tasked with creating the publisher’s next blockbuster sports franchise.

The studio is led by Aaron McHardy, a veteran who served as an executive producer for the FIFA series at Electronic Arts for over 15 years. The leadership team consists largely of former EA Sports employees, including Gary Paterson (Design), Tom Pan (Operations), Mike Thompson (Engineering), and John Cruz (Technical Art).

While 2K has not officially confirmed the specific sport the studio will focus on, industry speculation suggests a football (soccer) title, given the team's background and the studio's location in Vancouver. The company aims to combine startup agility with the scale of 2K to redefine the future of sports video games.
