31-year-old woman dies after stand‑up paddle accident on Austria's Traun River

A 31‑year‑old woman from Wels drowned during a night stand‑up paddle outing on the Traun River near the Traunspitz confluence. She was with her 38‑year‑old boyfriend from St. Marienkirchen; the pair planned to spend the night on the water but returned around 4:30 a.m. after a disagreement. The woman fell from her board and was found motionless at 5:20 a.m. despite immediate resuscitation attempts. She was taken to Klinikum Wels and died Sunday morning.

Prosecutors disclosed that both participants had consumed alcohol and the stimulant ketamine in the hours before the incident. No evidence of foul play has been identified, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the precise cause of death.
