365mc and partners to develop artificial skin using human fat
365mc, Bundang Seoul National University Hospital, and biotech firm Monitcell have entered a joint research agreement to develop next-generation artificial skin models using human fat-derived extracellular matrix (ECM).
The project aims to transform human fat, which was previously treated as medical waste, into a high-value bio-resource. Under the agreement, 365mc will provide human fat extracted during liposuction procedures. Monitcell will then perform a decellularization process to remove cells, leaving behind the ECM—a biological scaffold composed of collagen, elastin, and laminin. This standardized ECM will be provided to Bundang Seoul National University Hospital.
Professor Heo Chang-hoon’s research team will use the ECM to create artificial skin models and organoids to test how closely they replicate the structure and characteristics of actual human skin. This research seeks to overcome the limitations of current artificial skin, which often relies on animal-derived or synthetic materials. The findings are expected to contribute to fundamental and clinical research regarding wound healing and skin regeneration mechanisms.
The initiative follows a July amendment to the Waste Management Act in South Korea, which established a legal basis for recycling human-derived fat. While the amendment provides a framework, specific regulations regarding the targets and methods of recycling are expected to be implemented by July 2027.
