Italian police detain multiple suspects in arson, fraud and violent incidents

Italian law‑enforcement agencies carried out a series of arrests across the country in recent days. In the province of Ragusa, a 38‑year‑old was detained for deliberately setting fire to non‑hazardous waste near the Comiso fruit market during a night operation targeting illegal waste burning. In the same city, two Siracusan spouses, aged 54 and 50, were arrested on charges of aggravated fraud after posing as a carabiniere and extracting more than €150,000 from a vulnerable victim.

Separate incidents involved violent confrontations with authorities. A 27‑year‑old immigrant in Agrigento created chaos inside San Giovanni di Dio hospital, threatening a security guard and refusing to leave, leading to a charge of resistance to a public official. In Avola, a 40‑year‑old man assaulted Carabinieri while trying to enter the emergency‑room where his injured daughter was being examined, and was detained for violence, resistance and causing injuries to officers. Another 40‑year‑old in Modica threatened police with a gas cylinder while fleeing after breaching house arrest, resulting in arrest for resistance and evasion.

Other criminal cases included a 42‑year‑old in Bibbiena (Arezzo province) who deliberately set fire to a friend's apartment after a dispute over a small debt, and a 25‑year‑old Peruvian in Macerata who attacked police during a traffic stop, damaging a patrol car before being sentenced to a suspended term. Finally, a 39‑year‑old in Brescia, intoxicated and with prior offenses, assaulted healthcare workers and police, prompting a custodial order and a two‑year public‑order restriction.
