3D printing technology expands into large-scale residential construction
3D concrete printing technology is expanding from experimental architecture into large-scale residential applications. In Holstebro, Denmark, SAGA Space Architects and MS+ Arkitekter have completed ‘Skovsporet’, Europe’s largest 3D-printed housing development. The project consists of 36 student apartments across six buildings, utilizing a COBOD BOD3 printer to deposit concrete layers. The construction efficiency improved during the project, with printing times for later clusters dropping to just five days.
The Danish development emphasizes sustainability, using lower-carbon concrete and experimental elements that offer an 84% reduction in CO2 emissions, while preserving 90% of the site's existing woodland.
Globally, the technology is gaining traction in various sectors. In Argentina, the startup Grondplek is utilizing 3D printing to offer rapid construction, claiming a 120 m2 house's grey structure can be completed in 48 hours. Similar advancements have been noted in Japan and the United States, where the technology is being applied to commercial spaces and entire residential neighborhoods.
