3D Mammography shows potential in reducing interval breast cancer cases

A large German study suggests that 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, may be more effective at early breast cancer detection than traditional 2D methods. Research led by Stefanie Weigel from the University of Münster, published in The Lancet Oncology, indicates that 3D mammography could reduce the occurrence of interval cancers—cases where tumors are diagnosed shortly after a clear screening.

In the study conducted between 2018 and 2020, 99,689 women aged 50 to 70 participated across 17 screening sites in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. The findings showed a 29 percent relative reduction in invasive interval cancer cases during the first year, with 4.5 cases per 10,000 women in the tomosynthesis group compared to 6.3 in the traditional mammography group.

While the 3D method uses multiple X-ray images from different angles to create thin layers that prevent tissue overlap, researchers noted that the statistical difference could not be clearly confirmed over a two-year period.
