3S Technologies develops AkkuGuard battery fire safety box

3S Technologies GmbH, a company based in Saarbrücken, has developed AkkuGuard, a specialized safety box designed to mitigate the risks of lithium-ion battery fires during the charging process. The system is engineered to withstand temperatures exceeding 1500 degrees Celsius, addressing the extreme heat generated during thermal runaway events.

Beyond heat resistance, the AkkuGuard system includes integrated management for explosion gases and flames to prevent the escape of hazardous substances and open fire. It also features a built-in smoke detector to provide early warnings to personnel. The technology has been certified by Cetecom Advanced for commercial use.

Martin Bartels, managing partner of 3S Technologies, noted that while large stationary battery systems are often part of industrial fire protection concepts, the charging of smaller devices like power banks, electric tools, and laptops is frequently handled without adequate safety measures. The technology has already gained interest from airport fire departments.
