3sat to air documentary on Swetlana Stalin

The television channel 3sat will premiere the documentary ‘Swetlana Stalin – Ein Leben im Schatten des Vaters’ (Swetlana Stalin – A Life in the Shadow of Her Father) on August 18, 2026. Directed by Gabriel Tejedor, the film utilizes archival footage and animation to chronicle the life of Swetlana Alliluyeva Stalin (1926–2011), the only daughter of Soviet leader Josef Stalin.

Born into a life of extreme privilege and constant surveillance, Swetlana eventually became alienated from her father. In 1967, during the Cold War, she sought asylum at the US Embassy in New Delhi, leaving her children behind. Her defection caused significant geopolitical tension. Following her request, US President Lyndon B. Johnson facilitated her relocation to Switzerland, where she lived with nuns. The documentary explores her lifelong struggle to escape her father's legacy and the scrutiny of the KGB and the press until her death in 2011.
