A 44‑year‑old man was placed in pre‑trial detention after being accused of deliberately starting a large fire in the Pastra area of the Greek island of Kefalonia. Prosecutors and the investigating judge found sufficient legal grounds to keep him in custody and ordered his transfer to Agios Stefanos prison in Patras.

The blaze, which ignited around 11 p.m. on Saturday, consumed more than 6,000 stremmata of agricultural and forest land in the municipal unit of Eleios‑Pronnoi and caused extensive ecological damage. Strong winds helped the fire spread quickly, threatening nearby settlements. Ground and aerial firefighting units, volunteers, local authorities and residents were mobilised for several hours to contain the flames.

The suspect has a prior record of arrests and convictions for similar arson offences, which was noted by the authorities during the investigation.
