48 Cantones of Totonicapán march in Guatemala City over fuel prices

Authorities from the 48 Cantones of Totonicapán conducted a peaceful march through Guatemala City's historic center on Tuesday, September 8, to demand measures addressing rising fuel prices.

The demonstrators arrived at the Congress of the Republic to meet with lawmakers and seek updates on initiatives intended to mitigate the economic impact of fuel costs on the population. Indigenous representatives expressed hope for a consensus that provides direct support to citizens.

In response to the crisis, the President of Congress, Luis Contreras, noted that three specific proposals are currently under discussion: the implementation of a subsidy following an executive initiative, the elimination of certain taxes, and a third alternative measure. While the legislative plenary was not in session, block leaders met privately to seek consensus on these options.
