4A Games announces Metro 2039 release date and legacy updates
4A Games has announced the release date for Metro 2039, the fourth mainline entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise. The game is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a release on February 5 in Asian, Australian, and New Zealand markets.
Metro 2039 introduces a new fully voiced protagonist, “The Stranger,” a former elite Spartan soldier. The narrative follows his journey through a Moscow subway system unified under an authoritarian regime known as “Novoreich,” led by the character Hunter. The game will utilize a proprietary engine optimized for ray-traced global illumination and is expected to run at 60 frames per second on current-gen hardware.
In conjunction with the franchise's milestone of 50 million sales worldwide, 4A Games is also releasing a free “METRO Redux Next-Gen Update” for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. This update will bring visual and performance enhancements, including upgraded textures, refined lighting, and 4K resolution at 60FPS, to modern hardware. The update launches on Steam on October 22, followed by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on October 29.
