4iG to use Starlink satellite technology for mobile network in North Macedonia
The new mobile operator in North Macedonia, One Macedonia (part of the Hungarian telecommunications group 4iG), plans to utilize Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network to provide mobile and internet services. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski stated that North Macedonia and Montenegro will be among the first countries outside of Ukraine to implement this direct satellite-to-mobile technology.
Under the concession agreement, the operator is required to provide coverage in at least one city by March 2027, with Skopje selected as the initial location. The company aims to be operational nationwide by the end of 2027. The technology is intended to complement existing mobile networks, particularly benefiting rural and mountainous areas where traditional signals are weak.
Nikoloski addressed concerns regarding potential service disruptions, noting that the arrangement is a commercial agreement rather than a state-run military one. Additionally, he confirmed that Hungarian investments in North Macedonia, including the Bukojčani-Kičevo highway project, are proceeding according to plan.
