Uganda unveils Yoni Netanyahu monument at historic Entebbe airport

Uganda’s armed forces chief, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, unveiled a statue honoring Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu at the old Entebbe airport terminal on August 1, 2026. The monument marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Entebbe raid in which Netanyahu, the only Israeli soldier killed, led a force that rescued more than 100 hostages from a hijacked Air France flight. The ceremony also paid tribute to the civilian hostages and Ugandan soldiers who died during the operation. Officials highlighted the memorial as a symbol of renewed Uganda‑Israel partnership, with Israeli representatives praising the joint security cooperation. Kainerugaba, son of President Yoweri Museveni, described the monument as a reminder of shared values of courage, duty and mutual respect between the two nations.
