5‑Minute Walking Breaks Boost Office Mood and Productivity, Study Finds
A new study of more than 11,000 office workers in the United States found that walking for five minutes each hour improves mood, energy levels and productivity without reducing work efficiency. Researchers from Columbia University tested three break frequencies – every 30 minutes, every hour, and every two hours – and determined that the hourly five‑minute walk produced the greatest benefits while remaining realistic for employees.
The participants reported higher alertness and better attention, and the study suggests that brief movement breaks can enhance executive brain function, memory and overall health, counteracting risks associated with prolonged sitting such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and type‑2 diabetes.
The findings were published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and highlighted by health experts as a simple, low‑cost intervention that can be incorporated into daily work routines, including standing meetings or walking while on phone calls.
