5th Circuit Court dismisses challenge to Alien Enemies Act use

The court ruled the case moot because the Trump administration successfully removed the three original plaintiffs from the United States using alternative legal authorities. By dismissing the case on these grounds, the court avoided making a definitive ruling on the legality of invoking the Alien Enemies Act for such deportations.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs requested that the court allow new plaintiffs to substitute for the deported individuals, but the court refused this request. The decision leaves the underlying legal question regarding the president's authority under the century-old law unresolved, potentially delaying a final determination by the Supreme Court.
