62nd Porcijunkulovo festival opens in Čakovec with expanded program and thousands of visitors

The 62nd Porcijunkulovo festival opened on Wednesday in Čakovec, Croatia. Marketed as the largest tourist‑entertainment and religious event in northern Croatia, it will run until 2 August and features ten distinct festival zones covering spirituality, tradition, culture, music, gastronomy, sport and recreation. Organisers expect tens of thousands of visitors from across Croatia and abroad.

Mayor Ljerka Cividini said the festival tells the story of Čakovec and the wider Međimurje region. County prefect Matija Posavec highlighted that the opening theatrical performance honoured the Zrinski and Frankopan families, marking the 355th anniversary of their tragic death and the 460th anniversary of the Battle of Sziget. The main concert stage was relocated from the central Trg Republike to Zrinski‑Frankopan street to accommodate construction and improve connectivity between festival areas.

Additional zones include a spiritual area around the Church of St. Nicholas with a replica chapel and garden, historical and wine sections, children's workshops with STEM activities, a sports‑recreational area, and an urban square now situated in Park Valenta Morandinija. Folklore performances showcase regional heritage. A review of food stalls reported that prices remain similar to the previous year, with items such as langoš €4, langoš calzone €7, gibanica €4, and fritula €5.
