68‑year‑old bottle message discovered on the Rhine near Oberwesel, Germany

Construction workers uncovered a bottle on a Rhine riverbank in Oberwesel during a building project. Inside the bottle was a restaurant menu dated 16 July 1958 bearing the logo of the Köln‑Düsseldorfer river‑cruise company. The menu’s reverse side carried a brief note in French asking for pen‑friends, ending with a German address near Euskirchen.

Mayor Jan Zimmer said the message was likely written by vacationers who had travelled on the ship Drachenfels, which operated between Koblenz and Mainz. He noted the French language might reflect a perception that the Rhine flows through France or a recent French language lesson. The bottle appears to have been thrown into the river locally, possibly near Oberwesel or Kaub, rather than upstream.

The find offers a glimpse into everyday life and leisure on the post‑war Rhine, but no further investigative actions have been reported.
