Tibet earthquake kills 16 and injures dozens in Nagqu

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Baqen County area of Nagqu City in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region at approximately 10:33 pm local time on Thursday. The shallow tremor, occurring at a depth of roughly 10 kilometers, has resulted in at least 16 deaths and between 32 and 76 reported injuries.

The disaster caused significant structural damage, with reports indicating that at least 339 homes and 20 livestock shelters were destroyed or severely damaged. The earthquake also disrupted power supplies, telecommunications, and transportation, including the suspension of services on the Qinghai-Xizang Railway.

In response, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered intensified search and rescue operations. More than 5,000 personnel, including police, firefighters, and military members, have been deployed to the region. Authorities have also evacuated 12,489 residents to safer locations. Rescue efforts are being complicated by harsh weather conditions, including freezing temperatures expected to drop to -9°C and potential snowfall.
