800th Anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi Marked Across Europe
Relics of Saint Francis of Assisi arrived in Romania for the first time and are on display in Cluj, part of a series of commemorations for the saint's 800th anniversary.
In Oradea, the Association of United Romanian Greco-Catholics held a spiritual retreat at the Franciscan Monastery “Sfânta Treime” from 9‑12 July, featuring liturgies and reflections led by Fr. Ionuț Cherecheș.
Italy hosted several cultural events: a theatrical‑musical performance “La spada e l’incanto” inspired by the Canticle of the Creatures was staged on 31 July at the Palazzo Baronale in Collepasso, created by singer‑songwriter Massimo Donno and writer Fabrizio Saccomanno. On 9 August, the Castiglione di Paludi Archaeological Park organized a dialogue on Saint Francis with writer Pierfranco Bruni and park director Donatella Novellis, celebrating the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death.
German news also noted activities in Fulda, where the Franciscan community marked the milestone, underscoring a continent‑wide series of religious and cultural observances.
