On 6 August 2026 Japan marked the 81st anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The ceremony was held at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and drew roughly 50,000 participants, including representatives from a record 123 countries and regions. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attended for the first time as head of government and pledged to uphold Japan’s three non‑nuclear principles – no possession, production or introduction of nuclear weapons – as the country prepares to revise its key security documents. Mayor Kazumi Matsui used his peace declaration to call for the immediate abolition of nuclear weapons and criticised nuclear deterrence. The United States was represented by the deputy chief of mission at its Tokyo embassy. An updated victim register placed in the park’s cenotaph now lists 353,639 names. Local assemblies across Japan – 128 bodies from 36 prefectures – submitted written opinions urging the government to maintain the non‑nuclear principles. A separate memorial ceremony honored South‑Korean victims, with about 250 attendees and a list of 2,826 names.
