85th Anniversary of Saint Maximilian Kolbe’s Sacrifice Commemorated at Auschwitz
On 29 July 1941, Franciscan friar Maximilian Maria Kolbe volunteered to die in place of fellow prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Ten inmates had been sentenced to death by starvation as retaliation for a prisoner's escape; Gajowniczek was among them. Kolbe was executed on 14 August 1941 by injection of phenol administered by an SS guard.
Polish Catholic communities are marking the 85th anniversary of Kolbe’s martyrdom with a series of religious events. A Transitus service will be held in Harmężach, followed by a Mass before the “Death Block” (Block 11) of Auschwitz, where Kolbe was killed. Pilgrims from Harmężach and the Church of St Maximilian in Oświęcim will walk to Auschwitz, laying wreaths at the historic gate bearing “Arbeit macht frei” and other symbolic sites. The program also includes the reading of Kolbe’s sole letter sent from the camp to his mother.
Kolbe, who arrived at Auschwitz on 28 May 1941, was later beatified by Pope John Paul II, cementing his legacy as a symbol of self‑sacrifice and love.
