8th Avenue sanitation officials pledge new bins and enforcement

New York City Department of Sanitation Commissioner Gregory Anderson and other officials conducted a site visit to Brooklyn’s 8th Avenue to address long-standing sanitation and congestion issues. The inspection, requested by Council Member Vincent Tang, focused on illegal street vending, the improper disposal of household waste into public bins, and sidewalk obstructions caused by merchants.

To combat the lack of facilities, the Department of Sanitation committed to installing between 120 and 140 new public trash bins in the area within the next month. Officials also pledged increased enforcement, including nighttime inspections of trash bags to identify illegal dumpers and enhanced monitoring of street vendors to ensure they adhere to spacing regulations.

Community leaders, including Wong Kai-wang, noted that the waste problem is exacerbated by a lack of dedicated residential trash collection points for apartment buildings, forcing residents to use public bins. Proposed solutions include creating designated residential bin areas and potentially transitioning street vendors into organized, fixed-location markets to reduce sidewalk crowding.
