90th anniversary of 1936 Spanish Civil War killings prompts commemorations in Spain and Argentina

On 5 August 2026, the town of Yegen in Spain will hold a public ceremony to mark the 90th anniversary of the execution of local teacher Manuel Alonso Zapata, who was shot on 5 August 1936 near the Ávila cemetery. The event, organised by the Alpujarra de la Sierra municipality, the local UGT branch and the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory, will include the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and a concert by guitarist José Vílchez.

Meanwhile, in Rosario, Argentina, a series of cultural activities are scheduled throughout August to honour poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, also executed in 1936. The programme, arranged by the Agrupación Andaluza, features a flamenco master‑class, a theatrical discussion of Lorca’s work, workshops, concerts and a student showcase, with free admission for most events.

Both commemorations aim to preserve the memory of the victims of the Spanish Civil War and to promote cultural reflection on the legacy of the 1930s repression.
