Byzantine Shipwreck off Croatia Yields Record Gold Treasure

Archaeologists from the Croatian Institute for Conservation have identified a shipwreck near the island of Mljet that dates to the 7th‑8th century and is linked to the Byzantine Empire. The wreck yielded more than 600 grams of cleaned gold objects, making it the largest gold haul ever recovered from a Mediterranean shipwreck.

The treasure includes rare gold belts set with emeralds, rubies and pearls, as well as a gold seal ring bearing the image of an emperor. Coins from the Heraclian dynasty and other high‑status jewelry suggest the vessel carried a senior Byzantine official rather than a typical merchant cargo. The discovery follows a decade‑long underwater survey of the area by Croatian researchers.
