9/11 anniversary honors rescue dogs and fallen heroes

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, various commemorations have highlighted the contributions of rescue animals and first responders. An estimated 300 dogs, including search and rescue, cadaver, and therapy dogs, were deployed to Ground Zero to assist in recovery efforts. Notable canine heroes include Apollo, the first dog on the scene, and Trakr, who located the last human survivor. The Golden Retriever Bretagne, a search dog from the Texas Task Force 1, has also been recognized with a bronze statue.

In New York, the NYPD has honored fallen officers and those who died from 9/11-related illnesses by naming active K-9 units after them. This includes Moira Ann, named for Officer Moira Smith, and K-9 Ragner, named for Lt. William Wanser III. These dogs participate in public duties at high-traffic events and memorial services.

Additionally, firefighters continue the tradition of stair climbs, symbolically ascending the 1,100 feet (approximately 2,200 steps) of the World Trade Center towers in full gear to honor the 343 FDNY members who lost their lives during the attacks.
