New data from the World Trade Center Health Program reveals a 1,680 percent surge in certified 9/11-related cancer cases over the last decade, rising from 3,204 in 2015 to 57,044 this year.

In a significant shift, the number of cancer cases among civilians—including residents, workers, and students who were near Ground Zero—has surpassed the number of cases among first responders. Civilian cases have reached 28,913, a 4,066 percent increase since 2015, while first responders account for 28,131 cases.

Medical professionals are noting an increase in rare and uncommon cancers linked to toxic exposure. The program has recorded 82 cases of thymus cancer, a condition that typically accounts for less than 1 percent of all cancers. Additionally, there are 591 recorded cases of neuroendocrine cancers, with survivor cases rising 6 percent between March and June alone. Attorney Michael Barasch noted that the program is losing roughly two clients per day and seeing a new cancer certification every 50 minutes.
