988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline sees expansion and funding challenges

Efforts to promote and fund the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are progressing through different approaches in various U.S. states. In North Carolina, officials marked National 988 Day by unveiling new signage at state-owned parking facilities in Raleigh. This initiative, a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Administration, aims to make calling 988 as familiar as calling 911 for mental health emergencies.

In Wisconsin, the lifeline has seen significant usage, with over 345,000 calls or texts recorded since its July 2022 launch. While a JAMA study indicated that suicides among 15- to 34-year-olds were 11% lower than expected during the first two and a half years of the service, Wisconsin faces challenges regarding long-term sustainability. Unlike some other states that have implemented telecommunications fees or specific budget appropriations, Wisconsin lawmakers have yet to enact a permanent funding mechanism for the service.
