98th Austro-Hungarian Infantry Regiment's Isonzo Battles (1915‑1917)

During the Fourth Battle of the Isonzo (April 1915), Italian Chief of Staff Luigi Cadorna sought a rapid breakthrough to capture Gorizia and advance toward Trieste. The offensive resulted in about 49,000 Italian and 25,000 Austro‑Hungarian casualties and failed to achieve its objectives, shaking public confidence in the army's high command.

In October 1916 the Austro‑Hungarian k.u.k. 98th Infantry Regiment (c. a. k.) was transferred from the Tyrolean front to the Isonzo sector, joining the reserve of Sector IIIb under Field Marshal Lieutenant Alfred Edler von Schenk. The regiment participated in the fourth through seventh Italian offensives, after which its battalions were moved to mountain warfare in the Lovćen range on the Montenegrin border. The series of Isonzo battles from 1915 to 1917 caused heavy losses on both sides and ended each campaigning season with a winter pause.
