A Coruña Council votes to annul transfer of Casa Cornide to Franco family

The A Coruña City Council has voted unanimously to annul the agreements that allowed the Franco family to acquire Casa Cornide, a property that was originally part of the municipal heritage. The decision aims to correct a process deemed illegal and fraudulent.

In 1962, during the dictatorship, the property was put up for auction and awarded to businessman Pedro Barrié de la Maza, who subsequently sold it to Carmen Polo, the wife of dictator Francisco Franco. Local officials described the original transaction as an operation designed to favor the interests of the Franco family rather than the public.

The move is a step toward recovering the emblematic building for the city. The process will now move to the Consello Consultivo de Galicia, after which the City Council must initiate judicial proceedings to officially reclaim the property. This follows years of historical research and legal analysis to address what officials call an 'absolutely undemocratic situation.'
