A Coruña intermodal station design sparks architectural controversy

The construction of the new intermodal station in A Coruña has sparked significant controversy regarding its architectural design and urban integration. Local residents, architects, and city officials have criticized the auxiliary building being constructed by ADIF, specifically the side facing Avenida da Sardiñeira.

Critics describe the new structure as a grey, windowless block that lacks aesthetic continuity with the historic stone station. The Colexio Oficial de Arquitectos de Galicia (COAG) has stated that the project fails to respect the heritage value of the original station or integrate effectively with the city's urban fabric.

Reports indicate that the final design deviated from the original 2011 proposal by César Portela and Idom, which aimed to blend transport with commercial and leisure spaces. The shift in design is attributed to rising construction costs and budget modifications, including the expansion of underground parking, which ultimately compromised the intended architectural vision.
