A Coruña mayor to convert San Pedro mountain elevator into covered viewpoint

The municipal government of A Coruña announced that the long‑out‑of‑service elevator on Monte de San Pedro will not be repaired but will be repurposed as a covered viewpoint, preserving the glass structure while adding an exhibition space about the city's history. Mayor Inés Rey said the elevator's lifespan ended and safety regulations would make its restoration impossible, so the city will instead give the landmark a "new life" as a tourist attraction.

Separately, the town of Cabanillas del Campo will close the Parque Buero Vallejo to the public from 4 August for a comprehensive rehabilitation. The €483,000 project, awarded to construction firm Grupo Raga, will replace walkways, update urban furniture, and add new landscaped areas to improve accessibility, safety and sustainability of the popular green space.

Both initiatives are part of broader municipal efforts in Spain to modernise public amenities and adapt historic or recreational sites to current safety standards and community needs.
