A Illa de Arousa faces increasing coastal erosion

Coastal erosion is increasingly impacting A Illa de Arousa, a municipality in Galicia that relies heavily on maritime resources and tourism. In the O Furado area, the sea has eroded the sand beneath pine forests, necessitating the removal of wooden walkways and the cutting of trees at risk of falling.

To address this, the local council, with support from the Xunta de Galicia, plans to install a wooden wall to mitigate erosion. This follows previous efforts in areas such as A Sapeira, Semuiño, and Abilleira, where containment walls were constructed, though their effectiveness has varied due to severe storms.

The phenomenon is visible across much of the coastline. For instance, a monolith installed in 1982 during the construction of the A Illa bridge was originally placed on land, but is now frequently submerged by tides, signaling the advancing sea.
