A-League women’s clubs lock up veteran defenders as Newcastle Jets release eight players

Melbourne City have re‑signed Matildas defender Karly Roestbakken on a one‑year contract for the 2026/27 Ninja A‑League season, extending her stay to a fifth year. Since joining in October 2022 she has made 73 appearances, helped the team win three consecutive Premierships, the 2025/26 Championship and reach the AFC Women’s Champions League final, and earned a return to the national squad.

Wellington Phoenix have added former New Zealand captain Abby Erceg on a one‑year deal, bringing the 36‑year‑old defender back from Mexican side Toluca. Erceg, a four‑time World Cup and Olympic participant with over 200 NWSL appearances, is expected to provide experience as the Phoenix aim to improve after last season’s Grand Final run. Meanwhile, Newcastle Jets have confirmed that eight first‑team players – Josie Wilson, Olivia Page, India Breier, Haley Johnson, Charlotte Lancaster, Melina Ayres, Anna Leat and Kelli Brown – will depart after their contracts expire.
