Ağ Nene Tepesi offers nature and cultural tourism potential

Ağ Nene Tepesi, located approximately 11 kilometers from the Otlukbeli district in Erzincan, is emerging as a site of interest for nature and cultural tourism. The area features seasonal travertine formations created by mineral-rich waters containing calcium, magnesium, and iron. These waters emerge from seven distinct springs that flow for about one month each year, with locals noting that each spring has a unique taste.

The site holds significant cultural value due to local legends surrounding a woman known as ‘Ağ Nene’ or ‘Ak Kız’. According to folklore, she assisted soldiers during the Battle of Otlukbeli and was martyred while providing water to an enemy soldier. It is believed her grave is located in the area.

In addition to its geological and historical features, the region is rich in medicinal plants such as St. John's wort and mountain thyme. There are ongoing discussions regarding the importance of preserving the area and developing sustainable tourism to support the local economy and protect its natural and cultural heritage.
