A. R. Rahman faces religious debate and new musical collaboration

Music composer A. R. Rahman is at the center of renewed discussions regarding the intersection of his religious beliefs and his creative work. Critics have pointed to specific instances in his career, such as the modification of lyrics in the 2004 film ‘New’ to avoid equating humans with God, as evidence of his Islamic convictions influencing his compositions.

Other debates involve the song ‘O Paalanhaare’ from the film ‘Lagaan’. While the song uses imagery associated with Hindu devotion, Rahman and his collaborators have described it as a universal prayer intended to transcend specific religious boundaries. Supporters argue his work reflects India’s pluralistic culture, whereas critics question the absence of explicit Hindu deity references in other projects.

In separate news, singer Heer has expressed gratitude for her collaboration with Rahman on the track ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’. She noted that Rahman approached her after hearing her music on Instagram and praised his unique ability to elicit deep emotion from a vocalist.
