A14 motorway Vinci tunnel reconstruction to use 83-ton mobile shield
Work will begin on October 19 to reconstruct the lining of the Vinci tunnel on the A14 motorway, located between Pedaso and Grottammare in the direction of Pescara. To facilitate these operations, an 83-ton mobile shield, technically referred to as a ‘cassero’, will be deployed. The nine-meter-long metallic structure is designed to separate the construction area from active traffic lanes, allowing for concrete pouring while maintaining vehicle flow.
Autostrade per l’Italia stated that the shield can be moved progressively along the tunnel. In the event of high traffic volumes or emergencies, construction can be temporarily suspended to activate an additional lane for vehicles. During phases where work cannot be performed alongside traffic, circulation will be managed via a single lane per direction using a diversion on the northern carriageway toward Ancona.
Additionally, a monitoring system designed by Movyon will be implemented to enforce height restrictions. Portals installed before the tunnel will detect vehicles exceeding the maximum allowed height of 4.30 meters, using traffic lights to signal violations. Such vehicles will be directed to the Piceno Ovest service area for inspection by the State Police.
