A2 Südautobahn: Four injured in car crash near Hartberg

A serious car accident occurred on the A2 Südautobahn near Hartberg on Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026. A vehicle carrying four occupants and a dog veered off the road for unknown reasons, crashed through a barrier, and overturned in an adjacent wooded area.

Two occupants and the dog managed to free themselves from the vehicle. Two other passengers remained trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency responders from the Hartberg and Markt Allhau fire departments utilized heavy rescue equipment to extricate the remaining individuals after securing the steep, unstable terrain.

All four occupants sustained injuries of an unspecified severity and were transported to hospitals by the Red Cross. Two rescue helicopters were deployed to assist with the operation. The A2 motorway toward Vienna was temporarily closed during the rescue and recovery efforts, which involved the use of cranes and winches to remove the vehicle. The operation concluded approximately three hours after the initial alarm.
