Tony biopic explores Anthony Bourdain’s early years in Provincetown

The new A24 biographical film ‘Tony’, directed by Matt Johnson, is receiving critical acclaim for its portrayal of a young Anthony Bourdain. Rather than a traditional cradle-to-grave biopic, the film focuses on a specific formative period: the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Based on early chapters of Bourdain’s memoir ‘Kitchen Confidential’, the story follows a 19-year-old Bourdain as he navigates the chaotic world of a seafood restaurant.

Dominic Sessa stars as Bourdain, with a supporting cast including Antonio Banderas, Emilia Jones, and Leo Woodall. Critics have praised the film’s coming-of-age narrative and Sessa’s performance. The production also utilized period-accurate details, such as a Timex Vietnam Camper watch, to enhance authenticity.

While the film explores Bourdain’s early struggles with identity and discipline, director Matt Johnson noted that he intentionally omitted certain famous quotes to better reflect the tension between living life to the fullest and the professional responsibility Bourdain eventually embraced.
